The Dos and Don’ts of a Karaoke Party

Nothing screams fun like getting a group of friends, family or coworkers together for a musical occasion where you sing, scream, wail and laugh at everyone involved. A karaoke party is a great way to get to know people and share a fun moment with those you are already close with, and that is why they are growing in popularity.

However, as a fairly new trend, it can be difficult to know the proper karaoke party etiquette. Simply follow along to these dos and don’ts and you’ll be on your way to being the next karaoke king or queen in no time.

Do: Set a Time and Date in Advance

With casual get togethers, it’s perfectly fine to give limited notice and put things together at the last minute.

Of course, you can do that with karaoke parties too, but don’t expect your guests to be happy with you or expect all of them to be able to attend.

Don’t get the wrong idea that karaoke parties are formal, because they aren’t, but at least one week of notice through a simple text or call lets your guests know you’re a considerate party host.

Don’t: Cheap Out on the Equipment

If you’re hosting a karaoke party, the focus is of course on the karaoke and it should live up to the expectations.

If you’re really struggling to avoid costs, some might attempt to just put lyric videos from YouTube up on their computer screen, but that is distinctly amateur.

Instead, consider renting from an entertainment company, which certainly has state of the art equipment you can count on. Plus, it gives your party a sophisticated vibe!

Do: Know Your Song Well

Nothing is more awkward on karaoke night than when someone thinks they know a song better than they actually do and the truth comes out in front of everyone.

If you’re quick on your feet, some people can adapt to the on-screen lyrics, but that approach doesn’t work for everyone.

If you’re going to sing a song, make sure it’s one you know inside and out, frontwards and backwards.

Don’t: Hog the Mic

While this should be common sense, some party-goers seem to struggle with a common karaoke rule- one song and pass it on. Don’t try to get more than your fair share of musical fun and let everyone have a turn. That way, everyone gets to have fun, not just a select few.
